no good old color shading, just like when you draw on paper remember the 5 goldens of making 2d image shapes pop,
1) cast shadow
2) shadow edge
3) halftone areas
4) reflected light
5) full light areas.

you need at least these 5 tone values to get 3d shaping of an element.

I know if I was hand sketching this there would be some reflected lights (a small white line along bottom ridge o the nose , and a counter area in the cornea of the eye I'd just lift the pencil out with the gummy eraser, have to figure out that in paint.net. what I've tried so far just doesn't look correct ... bit too harsh. and as blooper says the eyebrows aren't quite there yet. i've only added two colors and I think I need 4 more to round them out.
there should be cast shadows under the neck and off to the right hand side yet and some drop shadows (maybe) under the hair line.

I know what I need to do but its the translation from head to keyboard right now that's stumping me.

late last night it was the hair I got inspired on. finally figured out the curves using bulge.

tonight well actually I'm hoping to get a full nights sleep, hope the computor and paint.net don't be calling my name. LOL!
